Case study

In all kinds of industrial production lines, there is a need for very precise and agile measurements. Typical solution for non-destructive measurement is a laser scanner. It consists of laser which illuminates section of the object, high-speed camera to capture image, and sophisticated image processing algorithms to extract object edges and measure distance.

With laser scanner it is possible to measure profiles, angles and gaps in objects during the production.

Solution

Xilinx Spartan 6 FPGA is an excellent platform to interface CMOS digital camera and to achieve up to 4 KHz scan rate. Bitgear designs High speed image processing algorithms for efficient FPGA pipelining. In order to stream detection data and synchronize operation of many scanners in the line, Linux embedded computer is typically employed based on, for example Texas Instruments Sitara processor. Each instrument is connected with gigabit Ethernet link into sensors network.

In the area of non-destructive industrial measurements based on image processing, Bitgear offers a full stack of R&D services, complemented with small series electronics production. Bitgear develops custom high performance image processing algorithms with efficient implementation in Xilinx FPGA, industrial grade electronics subsystems design and implementation with carefully selected components for cost efficiency and long product lifetime, and embedded Linux programming for additional signal processing and networking.
