Personal Tracking Device

The development of modern wearable products demands consistent flow of information between user experience validation, mechanical design and electronics design.

Case study

The development of modern wearable products demands consistent flow of information between user experience validation, mechanical design and electronics design. Development of such products is based on making, since the evolution and refinement of all aspects of the design are influenced by physically trying the device.

A good example is small wearable device for kids, which implements geofence feature. The device is connected to app via BLE, which alarms when kid wanders out of range. In order to tackle the user experience, the device is equipped with a small color display, so that custom images can be displayed.

The works-like / looks-like device prototype has to be made with a quick turnover with the following goals:

  • User experience mockup
  • Attractive and credible presentation of the concept
  • Requirements refinement

Solution

The development is based on a make-test-validate approach. Based on initial requirements of the device, mechanical and electronics design is created and produced in small series. Firmware provides connectivity over BLE and serves as a beacon. It also display images on a small display. The device case is printed using 3D printing technology and electronic is physically produced by Bitgear’s proven partners.

The resulting device is a powerful and credible illustration of the concept. The device in this form is perfect to test the user experience and determine the direction of the further development step. Also, many valuable informations are gathered about power consumption and other important technical aspects.

Complete development cycle to get fully working device sample is ~4 weeks.

This approach is applicable to broad range of applications, including sports wearables, mobile telecare devices, EEG and ECG based devices, etc… (dodati)
